We need your help! McLean High School may be one of the top high schools in the country, but we are one of the last schools in Fairfax County that still has a grass stadium field. Most other schools in the county have acquired their artificial turf fields through developer proffers or in cost sharing with their local youth sports organizations. The McLean High School administration, Athletic, Theatre and Band Boosters, PTSA and students have been in talks with local politicians, youth sports organizations and the community for more than 18 months. We are now at the point where we need the McLean High School community’s help with raising the remaining funds needed to build this field.
The cost of installing an artificial turf field is $750,000.
So far, we have secured the following:
$200,000 – From Fairfax County Board of Supervisors John Foust (Dranesville) and Linda Smyth (Providence).
$100,000 – Possible partnership with McLean Youth Lacrosse (they will use the field on a second priority basis. All our students will have first priority scheduled usage).
$350,000 – MHS Athletic Booster commitment including current cash of $75,000 and up to $275,000 Loan from Chain Bridge Bank (which we will have to pay back over 10 years in addition to the annual FCPS Maintenance Fee of $15,000 annually).
For the remaining $100,000, WE NEED the ENTIRE McLean Community!!! We need private donations and corporate donations (naming rights are available!) If every McLean High School family made a $100 tax deductible donation to this initiative, we’d have enough to get this field installed for next year’s fall sports season.
Who Will Benefit? Our entire student body will be filled with Highlander Pride whether a participant or spectator at our State-of-the-Art Stadium Field. Football, Girls Field Hockey, Boys and Girls Lacrosse, and Boys and Girls Soccer will be the primary athletes benefitting from the improvements. In addition, our nationally recognized marching band will actually be able to practice on the field versus the parking lot! During the school day, PE Classes will be allowed on the field as well, currently they are only allowed on the outskirts of the grass and on the track.
The goal of the MHS Campus Campaign is to bring the entire MHS campus into the 21st century with at least one turf field initially as the first step in developing a comprehensive campus improvement master plan. Future plans include an improved track, a sixth tennis court, a modernized scoreboard, motorized basketball nets, and a second artificial turf field. All our students will benefit from these improvements.
Thank you for your support in making a dream come true for a safer and more durable field for our hard working students!
